Officials at Sampson Regional Medical Center recently hosted a Volunteer Appreciation Reception to recognize and celebrate the dedicated individuals who generously give their time in service to patients, families and staff.

A team of 20 volunteers and 10 chaplains provides comfort, support and what hospital officials described as a “compassionate presence” throughout the hospital. From greeting visitors to offering spiritual care during some of life’s most vulnerable moments, volunteers play an essential role in the patient experience.

As the needs of the community continue to grow, so does the need for additional volunteers and chaplains, hospital officials noted.

“Those looking to make a meaningful impact are encouraged to join this important work and become part of a team committed to serving others,” officials said.

Among those honored during the reception was longtime volunteer Jackie Chapman, who is celebrating 10 years of volunteer service with the organization this year.

Hospital administrators described Chapman as someone who has never been content sitting still. Raised in Jacksonville in a large farming family, Chapman learned the value of hard work early in life, experiences officials said helped shape her work ethic, resilience and determination.

According to a hospital release, Chapman carried those qualities into a 35-year career in Washington, serving with the U.S. Department of the Treasury. In her role as controller of U.S. currency, Chapman worked in financial operations that required precision, integrity and commitment.

After retiring from federal service, Chapman brought that same dedication back home to Sampson County. This year marks a decade of volunteer service at the medical center, where she continues supporting the hospital’s mission through her time and service.

“Jackie’s journey is a testament to a life spent serving others,” Judy Naylor, director of Volunteer Services at SampsonRMC, shared in a statement. “From her early roots of working on the family farm near Jacksonville to the halls of the Treasury to the welcoming spaces of SampsonRMC, she continues to make a meaningful impact wherever she goes. We are honored to celebrate Jackie’s 10 years of volunteer service and the remarkable legacy she continues to build.”

SampsonRMC is also seeking additional volunteers interested in serving the community, Naylor noted. The hospital recently introduced “Sneak Peek Wednesday,” a new monthly opportunity for prospective volunteers to learn more about available service roles.

Held on the first Wednesday of each month, the program allows participants to tour volunteer service areas, meet current team members and explore where their skills and talents can make an impact.
