Newton Grove town officials are hoping to foster connection and encourage involvement in local events by way of a new cork board put up in town hall for residents to utilize for announcing events in and around the area.
The town’s deputy clerk, Dana Ellington, made that announcement during the board’s regular meeting Monday night, saying announced the new cork board has been placed on the left side of the wall as one enters town hall. This cork board, she offered, will be a place for community members to place flyers about events going on in and around town.
The new board is an addition to the one on the opposite side of the entryway, which shares information about the town budget, ordinances and zoning.
During the public comment section of the the July 13 meeting, the first opportunity to use the new board became available when Newton Grove resident Quenita Lee shared that her church, Cedar Point Disciple, is hosting a Back to School Bash on Aug. 8.
This event, she stated, is focused on Hobbton, but anyone is welcome. “No one will be turned away,” Lee stressed. There will be a backpack blessing, free haircuts, gas cards for teachers, and a “fun-filled” time to usher in the new school year. Lee, a former county Board of Education member, emphasized how important children and schools are to her church family. “We fed all the football players and cheerleaders last season. We hosted a football camp. We love young people.”
A smiling Ellington told Lee, “I’ll add it to the new board!
The flyer for this event is the first addition to the new cork board, and a donations bin can be found under it for backpacks and school supplies for the Aug. 8 event.
Town officials said they are excited to highlight Newton Grove news on the board and encouraged residents to both add their events to it and use the board as a means of finding out what is going on in town.
