No children attended Tuesday’s Lego Lab at the Miriam B. Lamb Memorial Library in Garland, an event that was part of the Sampson-Clinton Public Library’s July 2026 Select Summer Reading Events.
Colorful bins of LEGO bricks and lists of creative building prompts, many tied to the Summer Reading Challenge, were set out for participants. However, no creations were built that afternoon.
While the summer reading programs are wrapping up across all four Sampson-Clinton Public Library branches at the end of the month, Library Director Kelsey Edwards highlighted the many resources available at the Garland branch and expressed her desire for the community to know what the library has to offer.
Resources include public computer access, fax and photocopy services, black-and-white and color printing, and books and DVDs are available for checkout. Edwards also highlighted a newer service available at all library branches: blood pressure monitors that patrons can check out, as well as a monitor that remains at each branch where visitors can check their own blood pressure.
The Garland branch also offers free public Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi hot spots that can be checked out, though Edwards noted the hot spots are frequently unavailable because of high demand.
Garland Mayor Ralph Smith Jr., who stopped by the library Tuesday, stressed the importance of getting the word out about library programs, noting he was unaware the Lego Lab event was taking place.
Smith described the public library as an important asset to the town and said he wants to see it used “as much as possible.”
“I don’t want to see it go virtual; I want to see kids active,” the mayor emphasized while discussing the importance of children participating in community events.
Smith said he hopes future programs receive more publicity and draw larger crowds. He added that he plans to address library-related topics during the next Garland Board of Commissioners meeting, emphasizing the importance of ensuring the library is equipped to serve the community.
