Now annual senior health fair Aug. 5

Community seniors are encouraged to come out Aug. 5 for an opportunity to support their health and well-being. Eve Venters said she, along with Blue Cross & Blue Shield of North Carolina, are proud to help seniors in the community for the fourth consecutive year as The Senior Health & Community Fair returns to the Sampson County Agri-Expsition Center.

The first 200 guests will receive a free cooler bag lunch from Village Subs in Wallace, and a Ripe for Revival grocery voucher to shop at the mobile grocery store that will be a part of the Aug. 5 event.

This event is open to all community members and features a diverse range of activities, including bingo, Tai chi, and complimentary blood pressure checks. Sampson Regional Medical Center staff will be holding a blood drive at the event as well, and there will be many opportunities to learn about resources available to seniors here in the community, Venters pointed out.

Venters said the event was for “all seniors,” noting that this is “an opportunity for seniors to get out” and not only get health-related resources, but community ones as well. Venters stressed the importance of seniors “not being isolated” and how this event could be a connecting point to the community resources available, as well as a fun experience to attend with fellow seniors. She urged churches, adult daycares, and any community organizations to bring groups to the fair.

Venters explained that every year she asks seniors if they want the event to happen the following year and they all say: “We want you to do this again.” She stressed how important it is to her for the event to be not only helpful, but enjoyable for all who attend.

This year’s fair not only provides seniors an opportunity to access vital services, but is also a fundraiser for the Sampson County Senior Center. By supporting this event, programs for seniors will, in turn, be made possible. Venters shared that by visiting the fair, people are “not only taking a proactive step in their own well-being, but are also making a powerful statement of support to fellow seniors in the community.”

Eve Black & Associates Insurance and North Carolina Blue Cross & Blue Shield cover 100 percent of the expenses so that all proceeds go directly into supporting Sampson County Senior Services.

The purpose of Sampson County Senior Services is to research, evaluate, implement, and administer a coordinated system of services for older adults and family caregivers in Sampson County, in the most cost-effective manner possible. Senior services provides wheelchair ramps, adult daycare, and a nutrition program as part of their services.

Sampson County Department of Aging has a goal to enhance the quality of life for Sampson County citizens and educate the population about ways to stay healthy in the later stages of life. Venters urged to: “Please also let people know donations to Sampson Senior Services are welcome and can be made by calling them directly at 910-592-4653.”

Eve Black & Associates Insurance, she said, is “committed to supporting the health and well-being of the communities they serve” and is proud to partner with NC Blue Cross & Blue Shield to help seniors have what they need to stay healthy.
