A 16-year-old driving a vehicle reported stolen two days earlier led Sampson County deputies on a high-speed chase early Tuesday morning, reaching speeds of more than 100 mph as the vehicles traveled through Spivey’s Corner before ending near the Newton Grove traffic circle.

According to reports from the Sampson County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were conducting a driver’s license checkpoint on Fayetteville Highway at approximately 12:20 a.m. Sept. 8, when they observed a silver Kia travel through the checkpoint without stopping.

Deputies pursued the vehicle as it continued along Fayetteville Highway toward Newton Grove. Chief Deputy Marcus Smith said speeds during the pursuit exceeded 100 mph as the Kia continued north.

The chase ultimately came to an end as the vehicle approached the traffic circle in Newton Grove. According to the Sheriff’s Office, the car continued straight through the area before coming to rest in the median.

Deputies took the driver, identified only as a juvenile, into custody without further incident.

Further investigation revealed the Kia had been reported stolen Sept. 6 from the Maxwell Road area of Sampson County, authorities said.

“Great work by our deputies in safely bringing this pursuit to an end and recovering a stolen vehicle,” Smith noted.

The 16-year-old was charged by juvenile petition with felony fleeing to elude arrest, possession of a stolen motor vehicle, injury to real property, speeding, fictitious registration, resisting, delaying or obstructing a public officer, no operator’s license and failure to stop for a red light.

No additional information was available at press time.
