With a year left in her term, Clinton City Board of Education member Carol Worley has been elected to serve as the chairman for the 2017-18 school year.

During a joint work session and board meeting Thursday night, as the board reorganized for the upcoming school year, Worley was voted in by unanimous vote as the new chairwoman, replacing Georgina Zeng, and Mike Lanier was voted to replace Worley as vice-chairman.

The board’s attorney, Nickolas Sojka, conducted the meeting, asking the board for nominations for both chair and vice-chair. Board member E.R. Mason nominated Carol Worley, followed by a nomination for Georgina Zeng by Jason Walters.

With a split vote, Sojka asked board members to go back to the drawing board and make nominations, this time Mason nominating Worley and Zeng submitting a nomination for Walters. By a majority vote, Worley was chosen to serve the board in the capacity of chair for the upcoming school year.

“I thank you for your support and allowing me to serve the board in this capacity,” Worley said following the vote.

When nominations opened for vice-chair, Worley nominated Lanier, who was sworn in to his position just one year ago. With no other nominations coming forward, a vote was taken and Lanier was chosen by a majority vote.

“I am honored to be in this position and strive to do what I consider to be my best job while serving on this board,” Lanier shared.

Worley, who was first elected to the board in 2010, will end her term next year. She has served in the capacity of vice-chair for two years and says she is appreciative of her peers having the vote of confidence in her and allowing her to serve on the board.

Worley and her husband Anthony have three daughters, one who recently graduated from Clinton High School, and two younger who attend Clinton City Schools. She works for First Citizens Bank.

Lanier currently works for Murphy Brown as the director of corporate accounting and is married to Kim Hobbs Lanier, from Clinton. They have two sons, Hayden and Lanier, both graduates of Clinton High School.

When interviewed prior to being elected, Lanier said the one thing he felt he could bring to the board was his experience and involvement with PTSO.
