The first school supplies drive for a local photography studio was a success.
With the help of others, Kristen Michelle Photography distributed more than 700 items for students going back to school. The materials were donated by the public and a business that wishes to remain nameless. Some of the items collected included backpacks, pencils, pens, folders, paper and rulers.
Kristen Michelle Stone, owner, scheduled the collection period for two days at their location on East Main Street.
“We would like to thank everyone who donated their time and donated school supplies for this great cause,” Stone said.
But due to abundance of collections, the drive was extended to a third day.
Stone said she was happy to help the community. School supplies were sent to Mount Vernon Baptist Church, the Newton Grove Church of God, Falcon Children’s Home and Kennedy Home.
“We did really good and I hope that later on we can do just as good for the holiday season,” she said.
She started the fundraiser after having memories of children not having supplies while she was working for Duplin County schools. Her mother, a single parent, also struggled to purchase back-to-school items too.
One of the ideas is to get involved with the Toys for Tots Foundation, which distributes gifts to children throughout the holiday season.
Stone opened her studio on July 1 and has been taking photos for several years. Some of her work includes families, children and graduation pics for students. She also specializes in outdoor pictures. At the studio, Stone is assisted by her husband, Alson Stone, and her mother Cathy Roberts.
