Union Middle School eighth-grade students are actively learning about the Holocaust with a literal trunk-load of materials.

Janet Taylor, a teacher at Union Middle, recently received the materials through a loan called the Holocaust Learning Trunk Project, sponsored by the Georgia Commission on the Holocaust.

As a part of her English-Language Arts unit on Anne Frank, Taylor will incorporate the materials in the trunk into her lessons as needed in order to form an interdisciplinary unit for language arts and social studies. Students will complete a research project about the Holocaust for their social studies class, and they will choose a book from the trunk to read and analyze for their language arts class.

“My students and I are excited and thankful to have received the Holocaust Learning Trunk,” Taylor explained. “It will benefit students by allowing them to relate to the themes of the Holocaust with personal accounts of Holocaust victims and survivors through the literature and resources provided.”

The trunk is made up of different types of materials, including textual, visual, audio, and digital materials. According to the website, the materials “when combined ensure students gain positive character development and a deeper understanding of the importance of good citizenship.”
