In many areas, veterans could be considered an overlooked and underappreciated demographic, but not in Sampson County.
The Sampson County Veterans Council, Inc. is a 501-c-19 non-profit that ensures veterans, their dependents, and their interests are well supported as a thank you for the sacrifices veterans have made for the county.
Recently the Council voted in new leadership, with the newly elected officials ready to further advocate for local veterans and garner a greater understanding of the veteran population. While supporting local service members, active and inactive, is an important tenet in the Council’s focus, another is that of education, for both veterans and the public.
Under the new leadership, the Council is gearing up for their first educational opportunity of the year by sponsoring a free “Pancake Supper,” held at VFW Post 7547, located at 150 Veterans Drive, Clinton beginning at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 12.
The supper will boast a menu of pancakes, sausage, bacon and beverages while the food lasts. However, the real “substance” of the meal will be the opportunity to participate in Q&A sessions with knowledgeable guests from the Veterans Administration. Jeffrey Jarvis and Ira Shaw will be available to address community health care, travel and eligibility issues. Ann Knowles, director of Veteran Services for Sampson County, will also be available to answer questions at the event. In addition to the Q&A, participants will have the chance to meet veterans from the various American Legion Posts in Sampson County, along with members of VFW Post 7547.
Sponsoring a free event like this, the Council believes it can reach a greater number of not just veterans, who may not know about the many benefits available to them through Veterans Affairs, but also those who would simply like to support those who sacrificed for their country.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding potential benefits you or a loved one may receive as a result of serving in our United States Armed Forces, please come enjoy a free fellowship event on us and get to know your local Veterans Council and all that it has to offer.
