The Midway Middle School Chorus and Band program have been very busy this school year. The chorus director is Jessica Jackson and the band director is Meredith Johnson. They have had many accomplishments, milestones, and several firsts for their music department.

In February, the music department put on their first musical “Annie Jr.” This show was sponsored by Altman’s Grocery Barn and Sampson County Schools. They had the opportunity to put on the show for 500 students in Sampson County. They also performed two sold out night performances as a dinner theatre which was provided by Vinny’s of Roseboro. This was a great opportunity for the students to showcase their talent outside the classroom. Next year “Beauty and the Beast” will be the show of the year.

The chorus competed for the first time at MPA (Master Performance Adjudication) where they scored “Excellent” at Jack Britt High School. The chorus also had three students to make All State this year; Taylor Brown 6th grade (soprano), Skylar Jones 8th grade (soprano), and Jerrod Wise 6th grade (alto). These students had the chance to perform with 180 other students across the state.

In April, 22 students from the band auditioned to be in the Sampson County All-County band. This event was a two day clinic with Dr. Arris Golden, music professor at UNC Chapel Hill, and a concert on the last day in Meymandi Hall, Raleigh. During this concert they had the experience of playing with members of the North Carolina Symphony. Two 8th grade students, Faith Richards and Hunter Warren, were selected to perform in the All-District band in February. They attended a two day clinic and performed a concert with other students from south eastern North Carolina. Some of the band students performed at UNC Pembroke for the Solo and Ensemble Festival. All performers received a rating of “Excellent” or “Superior”.

The band and the chorus had the chance to compete in “Music in the Parks” at Busch Gardens in Williamsburg, Va. Both did awesome with their performances. Each group scored a rating of “Excellent” from their judges. The music program at Midway Middle School continues to grow each year. Come out to support them at their concerts. The chorus concert is Thursday, May 17, at 6:30 p.m. and the band concert is Tuesday, May 22, at 6:30 p.m.
