Godwin man facing more than a dozen rape, sex offenses

A Godwin-area man is facing more than a dozen charges of rape and sexual offense following his arrest Monday, his second in less than a month stemming from an ongoing investigation that began late last year.

On Monday, investigators with the Sampson County Sheriff’s Office, assisted by the U.S. Army Military Police, took Robert Theodore Sigler, 58, into custody at Simmons Army Field at Fort Bragg, where he was working as a civilian contractor.

Sigler, of 2544 Baptist Chapel Road, Godwin, was charged with four counts of statutory rape, two counts of statutory sexual offense, two counts of sodomy (crime against nature) and seven counts of indecent liberties with a child. Following his arrest, he was transported back to Clinton and placed in the Sampson County Detention Center under $1 million bond.

Sigler has an initial court appearance scheduled for Friday.

The charges stem from an investigation that began in November of 2017 based upon alleged incidents that occurred between 2016 and 2017 with a 12-year-old child, Sheriff’s Capt. Eric Pope said. Sigler was previously charged on April 20 with one count of indecent liberties with a child and two counts of sexual exploitation of a child.

Those multiple felony offenses from last month stemmed from a complaint last year regarding “inappropriate contact” with an underage girl. Sigler was placed in the Detention Center under $150,000 secured bond for those three offenses. The 15 charges leveled Monday brings total felony counts leveled on Sigler to 18.

“Investigators received a complaint in November of 2017 regarding inappropriate contact with a minor female by an adult male,” Sheriff’s Lt. Marcus Smith said at the time of Sigler’s initial arrest. “The male was a non-family member and the female in this case was under the age of 16. After a lengthy investigation, enough probable cause was established to charge the suspect in the case.“

Pope said Sigler was out on bond at the time Monday’s charges were served. Since that arrest, additional probable cause was developed, the sheriff’s captain noted, warranting the charges on which Sigler was arrested Monday.
