Sampson Community College has been all about new faces over the past several weeks. From new faces to the executive staff as well as a new facelift to the campus landscape, local residents are seeing a new SCC. Now, the college officially welcomes a new face to its main reception area.

The college hosted a reception this week for local artist Peter Butler and his work, Rescue.

“This one is about a rescue,“ says Butler, between discussing details of the work to visitors. “It is about some people rising to the occasion to attend to someone in great need.” That message is apropos, considering that the college prides itself on its faculty and staff who are always encouraged to go the extra mile for its students.

“We have never had any local artist provide any exhibit-quality work that we have hung here,” says SCC President, Dr. Bill Starling. “It has changed the appearance of our North building. We encourage people to just come sit and reflect on it.”

Lisa Turlington, SCC Foundation Executive Director, made the connection work.

“I was with the Arts Council for a while and Peter and I became friends after one of his shows,” she says. “I admire his work and particularly this piece.”

The college is so pleased with its relationship with the arts community, future plans may be on the drawing board for more events like this. “We are encouraging any local artist that has work they want to hang or loan to us, please come to us,” says Starling. “We have a lot of wall space and would love to feature local artists with photos, paintings and other art work. SCC really does reflect the best of our community and its artistic abilities.”
