A 69-year-old Clinton woman was killed Saturday in a two-vehicle collision near Mount Olive, which is still being investigated by N.C. Highway Patrol authorities. Charges are reportedly pending on a teenager in the deadly wreck.
According to reports, the two vehicles collided while traveling on U.S. 117 near Smith Chapel Road after 12 p.m. Saturday. N.C. Highway Patrol authorities said a 2007 Chevrolet Impala operated by Shirley K. Monk, 69, of Clinton was struck from behind by a 2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser driven by 19-year-old Ashley P. Marriner of Mount Olive. Following impact, the Chevrolet ran off the roadway, coming to rest on the right shoulder, while the Toyota overturned, coming to rest on its side.
Monk was pronounced dead at the scene. Marriner was transported to Wayne Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Highway Patrol authorities said speed and inattention were factors in wreck, which remains under investigation.
