Holiday postal deliveries to be made July 5

Subscribers to The Sampson Independent who receive their newspaper through postal delivery can expect the July 4 edition to come a day later.

In observance of the July 4 holiday, the local post offices will be closed, therefore those customers who receive their paper through postal delivery will get their Wednesday’s edition with their Thursday’s edition. Subscribers on carrier delivery will still receive their paper on the normal schedule Wednesday.

Approximately half of the local newspaper’s subscribers receive their daily paper through the postal system, something circulation manager Faith Sinclair says was done almost six months ago to ensure those in the more rural areas are getting their papers delivered on time.

“We have been doing this process for the last six months, and we started it as a way to ensure our subscribers got their papers on a regular schedule and at the time they were supposed to be getting it,” Sinclair explained. “In today’s climate, it’s more difficult to do this with carrier delivery.”

This process, however, proves to be a challenge on holidays.

“Most holidays fall when we don’t publish a newspaper, and the post office’s closing doesn’t pose a problem,” Sinclair said.

In November 2017, the Sunday’s edition of the newspaper started being printed for delivery on Saturday. This was done to allow for postal delivery and to ensure those subscribers in the rural areas were getting their papers delivered consistently.

“Our ultimate goal has always been to do what is best for our subscribers,” Sampson Independent publisher Sherry Matthews said. “We are truly sorry for any inconvenience this may cause and we assure our subscribers that we are looking at other holidays as they approach and working to do what we can to get the newspapers out on time.”

The majority of residents on postal delivery, especially in areas like Newton Grove and Roseboro, say they like the new method better. Papers are printed and delivered on the same day, regardless of the delivery method.

Articles can still be viewed online at or through the newspaper’s Facebook page.
