HARRELLS — An annual tradition of fellowship in the town’s park will continue with some Halloween fun added to the mix.

The Fall Community Event is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, at Harrells Community Park, 45 Park Street, Harrells. It’s being hosted by the North Gate Lodge No. 576 and Maggie L. Strong No. 639 of Harrells Masonic Family PHA. It’s one of the biggest fundraisers of the year for the organizations. Funds will go towards assisting community members with things such as school supply purchases, hair cuts, and holiday meals for senior citizens.

Some of the features include a car show, yard sale, cake walk, lawn mower pull, voter registration, games for children and a penny social. Heavy rain and strong winds from Hurricane Florence on Saturday, Sept. 15 spoiled plans for the annual event, but the storm allowed organizers to add more attractions. With Halloween a few days away, there will be costume contest for children, with prizes awarded for first, second and third place. Treat bags will also be given out. Another attractions for youths include a barrel ride.

“We’re gearing it a little more towards kids and families than an actual car show just because of what the communities have been through with the hurricanes,” said Nicholas Maynor, an organizer and member of North Gate Lodge No. 576.

For the car, truck and tractor show, Vehicle registration is $20 and the cruise around is scheduled for 9:30 a.m., followed by registration from 10 to 11 a.m. Next, vehicles will be judged until 1 p.m.

A 50/50 drawing for prizes will be held. The first place prize is a stainless steel grill. Cash prizes of $200 and $100 are going to second and third place winners, respectively. Vendors will also be available for visitors. Booth space for vendors is $100 and $35 for non-vendors. The event is free for the public, but food and drinks will be available for sale.

Families effected by the hurricane will receive meals for free as they recover from the aftermath. Tickets were distributed to churches for the victims.

“We had Florence and then we had a little bit of remnants of Micheal,” Maynor said. “We wanted to have a day of putting God first, a little bit of worship and a little bit of fun and laughter. It’s a combination of a fun-filled day for the community.”

Entertainment will be provided by choirs from the region. The Black River Pickers are also scheduled to perform. Maynor emphasized that he’s looking forward to spending time with people from different backgrounds and ethnic groups.

“We would really love for our surrounding communities to come out and enjoy a day of fellowship,” Maynor said with hopes for a large turnout.
