Along with fellow supporters and family members, Nekitta Sutton hit the pavement as she walked through Clinton to bring awareness to people dealing with grief.

Daddies Girl, Inc., hosted its first 3K Walk for Traumatic Grief Awareness Saturday morning. Sutton created the organization after the sudden passing of her parents James and Janice Watkins. The purpose is to form a support group for individuals who are dealing with the pain of losing a family member.

“It went great,” Sutton said about the walk about 3 miles. “We had a few to tell their stories.”

More than 15 people attended the event. It’s something she wants to continue in the future. With the holiday season coming up, Sutton is planning to get more involved with activities such as the upcoming holiday Christmas parade.

“I pray that we can start doing this annually and there’s more to come for Daddies Girl Incorporated,” Sutton said. “Everything went really good.”

Through future events and support efforts, Sutton wants everyone to know they’re not alone.

“There’s other people who can relate to our pain and we can be here to support each other,” she said. “A lot of times when people are grieving, they don’t understand how they are feeling. When there’s someones else going through it, they can help you by acknowledging what you’re feeling and help you work through the grief.”

Her brother James Watkins Jr. feels the same way.

“I’m proud of my sister for putting it on,” he said. “We suffered loss really, really close together and that was very traumatic for our family. Now it’s just me and her. I’m glad everybody came out to support and it was a good cause.”
