Drivers in Clinton will have to find their way around an upcoming road closure.

Starting at 9 a.m. on Jan. 27 NCDOT will close down a part of two roads starting at 1924 Rowan Rd and ending at 1920 Beamon Woods Road. The toads will be closed until 5 p.m. on Feb. 7.

West and Eastbound lanes will be closed on the two-lane secondary road. There will be no detour route for drivers to follow during the road closure since it was not a mandatory requirement for this road closure. Less than half a mile of road will be out of commission for two weeks, but NCDOT expects the impact on traffic to be low.

Closing both lanes of the road will enable NCDOT to safely replace the crossline.

The NCDOT Bridge Maintenance Department will be replacing the crossline beneath the road for the primary reason for improving the quality of the road and the safety of the motorists. Crosslines help drain ditches and can get clogged or deteriorate over time. The pipes are designed according to their location and they can be made of a variety of material. They also come in multiple shapes and sizes.

According to NCDOT, if a crossline pipe remains clogged and doesn’t drain water efficiently, it can weaken the roadway, causing unsafe driving conditions for motorists.

Crosslines can be damaged from cracking, joint failures or corrosion. If the damaged crossline is left untreated, it can cause roadway settlement and pavement failure. A damaged pipe can lead to a lack of water infiltration, which can cause pavement or shoulder failures or roadway settlement. It is best to fix these problems early on.

NCDOT makes it a point to evaluate pipes that serve as a crossline pipe at an intersecting roadway. At the intersection of Rowan road and Beamon Woods Road, part of the pavement is raised up from the rest of the road.

There is no information on what the scope of the project will be right now.

Currently, Raeford Royal, NCDOT Bridge Maintenance Supervisor, is in charge of the project. Communications has been notified of the upcoming closure and Traffic Services will handle the closure.
