2017 N.C. State Fair Premium Book released online

RALEIGH – Think you have the greatest garden in all the land? At this year’s 150th fair, you can find out once and for all. With contests in flower arrangements, cut perennials and annuals, culinary herbs, and trees and shrubs, there are numerous opportunities to prove your green thumb and earn a blue ribbon.

“I think the gardens are so popular because there’s a lot you can do with them,” said John Buettner, State Fair Flower and Garden Show superintendent. “From the Halloween Garden competition to the Color Me Crazy competition, and the gardens for different school groups, there’s a little something for everyone.”

To celebrate the 150th State Fair, several competitions will feature a special theme, including the Flower and Garden Show, Essay, Decorated Cakes and Kids Cookie Decorating competitions.

Other competitions include the Rabbit Photo Contest, the Great American Spam Championship and the “Almost Anything Goes” Clothing Contest, in which participants can enter articles of hand-crafted apparel that do not fit into other categories.

Competitions making their second-year appearance at the fair are the Commissioner’s Favorite Cookie, the Pre-Apprentice Pre-Engineering Mobile Robotics and the Shawls for a Cause and Hats for a Cause. All shawl and hat entries are donated to local cancer treatment centers, and participants have the opportunity to sign cards for the patients.
