Sampson County youth take part in competition

Sampson County 4-H’ers made big achievements during a regional competition for exciting presentations.

Seven local youths participated in the Southeast 4-H District Activity Day at Lenoir Community College in Kinston. Several presentations were made on topics ranging from sports, past presidents and animals. Participants previously qualified at the county level competition in May.

The youths participating in the event included Alannah Cain, Madison Lackey, Kaylee Lackey, Peyton Mathis, Destiny Davis and Kimberly Land, who showed support during the event.

Kaylee received the top prize, for her presentation on sharks in her age division. Now, she will represent the county and the region by advancing to the State 4-H Presentation Finals, scheduled for Saturday, July 21.

In a few weeks, Kaylee said she’s looking forward to doing her shark presentation again. During the Sampson County 4-H Banquet in November, she was honored as the Junior 4-H’er of the Year, at age 11. She’s been a part of the group since the age of 5. Kaylee is involved in the Cookie Clover Scouts and the Hippity Hop 4-H Rabbit Club.

Kaylee and Jewell Carr participated in the “4-H Entertains” portion of the contest. They competed against youths from 18 different counties in the region, with their routine from the Sampson County 4-H Talent Show.

According to Sampson’s 4-H officials, Jewell took home one of the top honors for the talent competition and brought home a blue ribbon. She was selected to perform as part of the day’s closing ceremony.
