Clinton police converged on Williams Street Monday night, around 7 p.m., searching for bullet casings believed to be evidence in a shooting that sent two men to Sampson Regional Medical Center around the same time.

Police Chief Adrian Mathews said an investigation was under way.

With blue lights shining and yellow crime scene tape marking off the area, police were hard at work searching for evidence Monday night, marking the roadway with yellow placards designating where bullet casings had apparently landed in the street, most of them lined up near a residence where cars, one of them with a flat tire, were parked in the yard.

Mathews said two gunshot victims had arrived at the hospital’s emergency room Monday, and officers believe the pair could be tied to the shots fired call near the corner of Williams and Lee streets.

Victims’ names, ages and addresses had not been determined yet, as officers continued to piece together what occurred and what led to the shooting.
