Clinton police are still at the scene of a shooting at Eastover Terrace, where three people were shot Monday afternoon.
Two of those individuals have been airlifted to local hospitals. No names have been released at this time, but it is believed all of the injured are between the ages of 25 and 30.
Police Chief Adrian Mathews said in a telephone interview that investigators were still trying to determine what happened to cause the shooting.
“We are still on the scene,” the chief said, noting that while there was still a large police presence in the area, Morrisey Boulevard had been reopened to traffic.
The shooting remains under investigation and a motive has not been established. Mathews did say that he and investigators believe “this is an isolated incident and there is currently no threat to the community.”
The police chief said in a prepared statement that officers responded to Eastover Terrace at 12:45 p.m. Monday after receiving reports of shots being fired and multiple gunshot victims. When they arrived, they found the three victims.
Immediately after the shooting, the area around Morrisey Boulvard was blocked with police cars and emergency vehicles, as onlookers peppered the streets hoping to get answers to questions about the incident.
Within a half hour of the shooting, helicopters could be heard overhead, at least one a medical transport trying to land at Sampson Regional Medical Center.
At press time, no further information about the shooting was available.
Authorities are urging those with information about the incident to contact the Clinton Police Department at 910-592-3105. Anonymous information may also be provided through the Clinton Police Department’s tip service by texting 847411, beginning the message with ‘tipcpd
