Teen among those killed in I-40 wreck

A 14-year-old girl was one of three people killed early Saturday morning in a head-on collision near I-40 mile marker 334.

While the teenager’s name has not been released, Sgt. Ashley Duff with the N.C. Highway Patrol noted in a second release that the other two individuals killed in the accident were 21-year-old Jonathan Toxtle Zacarias and 20-year-old Gabriel Toxtle Zacarias, both of 6025 Paddy Hollow Court Fayettevile.

The men were both occupants of a red Chevrolet Camaro, that troopers identified as the “at-fault” vehicle, with Jonathan Toxtle Zacarias listed as the driver of the vehicle and Gabriel Zacarias noted as the front right passenger.

According to N.C. Highway Patrolman Kevin Pearson, the accident occurred around 2:40 a.m. near the 344 mile marker, in the eastbound lanes.

An initial investigation into the accident shows the Camaro was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes when it collided “head-on” with a black Honda Accord.

Reports also noted that the driver of the Accord was airlifted to ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville for treatment; the 14-year-old girl, pronounced dead on the scene, was the front seat passenger in the Accord.

The eastbound lanes of I-40 were shut down just east of exit 343 immediately after law enforcement got on scene, but has now been reopened.
