An elderly Bradshaw Street woman died Thursday evening, one day after suffering burns and smoke inhalation following a house fire Wednesday night at her residence.
Social media was awash in prayer requests for Mozelle Register Hope, 89, of 1009 Bradshaw St., Clinton, who was found unconscious in her home when first responders arrived on the scene of the house fire, called in around 9 p.m. Wednesday.
Few details are available at this time, but authorities did confirm that the fire happened at 1009 Bradshaw St., Clinton and that the structure appeared to have received some damage. How much damage is yet to be determined.
Clinton Police Chief Adrian Mathews said Friday that because the fire resulted in a death, the SBI has been called in to assist with the ongoing investigation.
Mathews said that was simply protocol in a case such as the Bradshaw Street fire.
Both Clinton and area firefighters, along with city police responded to the fire scene after receiving the call, which came in at 8:46 p.m., and the blaze was quickly brought under control.
First responders at the scene Wednesday night noted that when they first arrived they observed heavy smoke visible in the single-family residence and immediately began a search of the residence.
During the search, Mathews noted in a report, firefighters located Hope inside and immediately removed her from the home.
The woman was taken by helicopter to the UNC-Chapel Hill Burn Center, where she later died.
She apparently was home alone at the time of the fire, which investigators believe could have started in the kitchen area, though no final information on the origin has yet to be confirmed.
Matthews said in his report that the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
