Many students enter Sampson Community College hoping to learn skills that can lead to future employment. Some courses are designed to specifically help those already employed to gain further skills to advance their career. SCC has now created a position designed to offer advice on how to land that job once the skills are in place.

Toledo Kemmer is the career specialist for the college. She assists students with resumes, application completion, interview tips, and their job search. In addition, she provides outreach to employers to inquire about their needs, whether it be specific training or employee needs.

Student Jasmin Ruiz recently visited Kemmer at her office looking for help. Her advisor, Benita Hayes heard about a potential job that she might be interested in and sent her to the career specialist office. Kemmer and Ruiz immediately went to work.

“We sat down together,” said Kemmer. “We went over Jasmin’s resume and made any edits that we thought would help. There was an opening that seemed just right for her so we made that connection.”

Kemmer advised Ruiz not only to apply for the position but actually dress up, visit the office and present her hard copy resume in person. The strategy worked.

“I went down to Sampson Regional Medical Center,” said Ruiz. “I went to the hiring department and they wanted to interview me on the spot!”

After interviewing Ruiz for the position, the hiring manager liked her a lot and she was given the job. Ruiz says, “I’m not even quite finished with school until May but thanks to the advice and the path I was offered, I was able to begin working. I am so excited!”

“There are times when we have a student in a specific program of study that will fit an employer’s staffing needs,” says Kemmer. “I look at this position as an opportunity to build and strengthen relationships within our community that brings us all together to help make Sampson County’s workforce the best it can be.”
