Part of the Chamber’s mission is to support and promote a healthy business and industry environment. Each year, the Clinton-Sampson Chamber of Commerce was honored to partner with the N.C. Department of Labor as we recognized those that have placed an emphasis on safety throughout the year. We celebrated these accomplishments with businesses on Tuesday, May 1st. We commend both the business and its employees for their effort through the partnership with the NCDOL and striving to make their workplaces safe.

Each year these awards are presented by Commissioner Cherie Berry, North Carolina’s first female labor commissioner sworn in on Jan. 6, 2001. A native of Catawba County, Commissioner Berry currently resides in Newton and is the former business owner of LGM Ltd., a company that produces spark plug wires for the automotive industry.

“I want to make North Carolina’s work climate as safe as possible,” Berry said. “There is a world of potential for this agency and for businesses across North Carolina. I am proud of what we have accomplished and will continue to strive to improve.”

Berry also believes the department and its nearly 400 employees should provide a service-oriented approach that gives concrete benefits to employers and employees.

“We want to provide a real service to every business and every worker in the state of North Carolina,” erry said.

The N.C. Department of Labor is charged by statute with promoting the “health, safety, and general well-being” of more than 4 million workers across the state. The laws and programs it administers affect every worker—and virtually every person—in the state.

The Chamber values the county’s workforce and each year it is evident that our area businesses and industries make safety and health of their employees a priority. Businesses such as Smithfield Foods, Murphy Family Ventures, City of Clinton, S&W Ready Mix Concrete, Prestage, Ecno Oil, Lear, Schindler, Star Telephone, and JW Transportation were honored at Tuesday nights dinner.
