Fresh from the farm

Shoppers of Fresh Future Farms can now get a taste of Sampson County.

Federally inspected meats from Beartrack Farms in Turkey are now being sold at the store located in the heart of the Chicora-Cherokee community in North Charleston, S.C.

Beartrack Frams, an organic, sustainable, humane farm that offers a wide variety of produce, meat products, and native flowers for purchase, was started in 2012 by Sharon Funderburk.

Funderburk operates the Community Supported Agriculture program and features her products many days at the downtown farmers market in Clinton. This is the first partnership where her products will be sold in a grocery store.

“Sharon has been a mentor since our early days, so it made perfect sense that we sell our meats direct from a farmer the way we do our seasonal produce,” Germaine Jenkins, CEO of Fresh Future Farm, said. “It’s a win-win-win for both farms and our customers.”

Beartrack Farms sells pasture-raised eggs, chicken, pork and grass-fed beef. The first delivery to Fresh Future Farm will include ground beef, beef soup bones, breakfast sausage, bulk hot and mild, Italian sausage, links (hot, mild, Cajun, bratwurst and chorizo), chickens, chicken necks and neckbones.

Beartrack and Fresh Future Farm do not use chemicals or antibiotics with crops or livestock.

Funderburk grew up working on her father’s dairy farm in Union County, helping her grandfather with his garden. She earned a degree from Duke University and went on to go back to farming for a time returning to graduate school and Ph.D. programs in sustainable agriculture. She built Walter P. Rawl & Sons’ organics division, and purchased 50 acres of land in Turkey in 2010 and began the Beartrack Farming business in 2012.

About Fresh Future Farm

Fresh Future Farm uses a multi-pronged approach to address health, wealth and quality of life issues in the heart of the Chicora-Cherokee community of North Charleston. Although Fresh Future Farm sits in a residential neighborhood, it feels like an old-fashion country store. Along with basic groceries, they sell a wide variety of specialty items that even accommodate specific dietary needs. This nonprofit grocery store accepts SNAP (EBT) in addition to cash, credit and gift cards.
