At Clinton City Schools, we are deeply committed to preparing all students for success in college, careers, and life. That commitment is reflected in our continued expansion of the AVID program — Advancement Via Individual Determination — across the district.
Now entering our third year of implementation, AVID is becoming a cornerstone of the educational experience in Clinton City Schools. What began as an initiative in fifth and seventh grade in the 2023-24 school year has grown into a districtwide effort to foster academic confidence, critical thinking, and future readiness in every student.
This year, we are proud to announce that AVID has expanded to include Butler Avenue School and Clinton High School, meaning students in grades 1-9 are now benefitting from AVID strategies and support. Previously, Sunset Avenue Elementary and Sampson Middle School laid the groundwork for AVID in our district by becoming schoolwide AVID campuses last year. With this year’s expansion, the AVID culture is becoming a unifying force throughout our schools.
But what exactly is AVID?
AVID is more than a program — it’s a mindset. It’s a nationally recognized framework that helps students develop the habits and skills needed to succeed not just in school, but in life. It is particularly focused on closing opportunity gaps and ensuring all students, especially those in the academic middle, are given the tools and support to achieve at the highest levels.
AVID works by embedding proven educational strategies into daily instruction and creating a schoolwide culture of high expectations. At the heart of the AVID approach is the WICOR framework — which stands for Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading. These five key areas are integrated across all subject areas to help students build deeper understanding, think critically, and communicate effectively.
Here’s how WICOR shows up in our classrooms:
● Writing encourages students to process and reflect on their learning.
● Inquiry fosters curiosity and higher-order thinking through questioning.
● Collaboration allows students to work together, learn from each other, and build interpersonal skills.
● Organization helps students manage their time, materials, and responsibilities.
● Reading promotes active engagement with complex texts across disciplines.
Through AVID, students learn how to take focused notes, participate in Socratic Seminars, set academic and personal goals, and prepare for college and career pathways. Beyond academic skills, AVID nurtures confidence, self-advocacy, and a growth mindset.
As a parent or guardian, what can you expect?
You’ll begin to see your child participating in quick writes, engaging in thoughtful class discussions, and managing their assignments through classroom binders and school planners. You’ll hear them talk about college, explore career options, and speak with excitement about their future. Most importantly, you’ll see them believe in themselves and their ability to succeed.
We are investing in AVID not only because it works, but because our students deserve every opportunity to reach their full potential. Our teachers and staff are actively engaging in ongoing AVID professional development to ensure that this framework becomes part of the fabric of our district.
We are excited about the direction Clinton City Schools is heading and proud of the work our students and educators are doing every day. The expansion of AVID is not just about adding a program — it’s about creating a consistent, high-quality learning environment across all schools.
Together, we are building a stronger foundation for lifelong learning, and we thank our families and community for supporting this important work. To learn more about AVID in Clinton City Schools, please contact your child’s school for more information.
