The power of local partnerships in Clinton City Schools

Public school education is often discussed in terms of budgets, mandates, and accountability measures. But here in Clinton, North Carolina, some of the most meaningful progress in our schools has come from something far more personal: local partnerships rooted in community belief, generosity, and long-term commitment to our children and educators.

Clinton City Schools is fortunate to be supported by partners who understand that investing in education is not a one-time act, but a sustained relationship. Two such partners — the Clinton Area Foundation for Education (CAFE) and the Simple Gifts Fund — demonstrate how local and regional funding can profoundly shape student engagement, academic performance, classroom innovation, and the ability to recruit and retain excellent teachers.

For nearly four decades, CAFE has quietly but consistently filled the gap between what public funding can provide and what classrooms truly need. Established in 1988, CAFE exists for a simple but powerful purpose: to support Clinton City Schools by funding resources and opportunities that fall outside traditional budgets. Through community fundraising, partnerships with the United Way of Sampson County, and events that showcase student talent — such as the annual student art auction — CAFE places resources directly into the hands of teachers and students.

The impact of that investment is tangible. Teacher mini-grants funded by CAFE have brought 3D printers and pens into classrooms, launched underwater robotics programs, expanded STEM learning, strengthened arts education, and provided classroom novel sets that deepen literacy and engagement. These are not “extras.” They are tools that spark curiosity, deepen understanding, and make learning come alive. When students are engaged, performance improves. When teachers are empowered to innovate, classrooms thrive.

At the same time, the Simple Gifts Fund extends the reach of local impact beyond individual classrooms to long-term educational opportunity. Developed through the philanthropic work of The Anonymous Trust, the Simple Gifts Fund was created with rural and under-resourced communities in mind. Since 2010, it has invested in Clinton City and Sampson County students and educators by addressing two critical needs: access to higher education and sustained support for teacher growth.

Through its scholarship program, Simple Gifts opens doors for high-achieving students — students in the top quarter of their graduating class who demonstrate leadership, character, and academic excellence. By offsetting unmet financial need, these scholarships make it possible for students to attend private liberal arts colleges outside North Carolina that might otherwise be out of reach. The result is not only individual opportunity, but a powerful message to our students: excellence is recognized, potential is valued, and their community believes in their future.

Equally important is Simple Gifts’ investment in educators. Love of Learning Grants support innovative instructional programs, while Teacher Fellowship Grants provide summer fellowships for professional renewal and intellectual growth. These opportunities do more than enhance lesson plans; they renew purpose. In a time when districts across the state and nation are grappling with teacher recruitment and turnover, investments like these matter. Teachers who feel supported, trusted, and professionally valued are more likely to remain in the classroom — and to bring their best selves to students every day.

Together, CAFE and the Simple Gifts Fund illustrate a powerful truth: when communities invest locally, the returns are exponential. Students benefit from enriched learning experiences and expanded opportunities. Teachers gain the tools, inspiration, and professional respect needed to grow and stay. Schools become places of innovation rather than limitation.

Public schools cannot — and should not — do this work alone. Clinton City Schools is stronger because of partners who see education as a shared responsibility and a long-term investment in the vitality of our community. As superintendent, I am deeply grateful for these partnerships and hopeful that their example will inspire continued and expanded support for the students and educators who call Clinton home.

When we invest together, we build more than programs or scholarships. We build confidence, opportunity, and a future worthy of our children.

Dr. Wesley Johnson is the superintendent of Clinton City Schools.
