You have to hand it to Garland town officials for their efforts to improve the small municipality. While often hampered by budget restraints, board members do their best to find a way to not only promote the town but do things that offer citizens opportunities to go out and enjoy their town.

Such is the case with the Curtis D. Cain Memorial Park. As with the playground and recreation fields that town officials continue to improve, the memorial park will be beneficiary of new benches and further amenities designed to make the area more attractive and useful.

Already a basketball court has been installed and plans are to add picnic tables, a shelter and a walking track over the course of the next few years. And, if Commissioner Ralph Smith’s request is approved, as we think it should be, flags flying from poles in the center of town will be fixed soon.

The fountain, too, has seen repair as well, another much needed improvement that helps make the town look like an active, progressive place to live.

None of the renovations and changes are earth-shattering, but for a small town like Garland they are not only noticeable but greatly appreciated by citizens who taken great pride in their community and want to be recognized for taking positive steps that improve the look and feel of the place they call home.

Town officials, we know, don’t always get along, but it seems they find a way to pull together when it comes to improving the small municipality. That is as it should be. While some board members may have personal agendas, we are at least glad they can find a way to step around themselves long enough to do things that will benefit the town and its citizens.
