HARRELLS – The Greenfield Knights spoiled Senior Night for Harrells Christian Academy Tuesday, battling through controversy, physical play, and emotion-filled moments to pull off a 3-2 victory that holds off the Crusaders’ chances of a sole possession of the conference championship.

It was a night filled with energy and intensity from the opening whistle. The visiting Knights controlled possession early, creating the first shot on goal about 25 minutes into the game. Harrells found its spark shortly after, when Alex Trejo (23) delivered a strong attempt, followed by another strike from Jesus Bautista (10) that forced Greenfield’s keeper to react quickly.

That same Harrells standout capitalized on a penalty kick at the 15-minute mark, putting the Crusaders on top 1-0. The home crowd roared as Harrells looked to seize the momentum and finish their regular season in championship form.

Greenfield, however, refused to fold. Despite a few wide shots and yellow cards for both sides, the Knights kept pushing the pace and maintaining steady possession. The match’s physical tone intensified midway through the second half when two players — one from each team — were ejected with about 25 minutes remaining.

The turning point came when Greenfield’s Landyn Coolbaugh (10), who had been a constant threat all night, buried a penalty kick with just over 21 minutes left to tie the match. Minutes later, he struck again when the Harrells keeper came up early for a save and failed to secure the ball, giving the Knights a 2-1 lead.

Sophomore John Dean then provided the dagger for Greenfield, scoring with 6:41 remaining to make it 3-1. Harrells continued to fight, cutting the deficit to one on a late goal from Alex Trejo (23) at the 3:28 mark, though the play resulted in a yellow card after a collision with the goalkeeper. The Crusaders launched one final attack, but a clutch save by Greenfield’s keeper, Eli Farris, sealed the 3-2 win.

For Greenfield coach John Venturella, the victory was the result of focus, adjustments, and playing the Knights’ brand of soccer.

“Once we just started to lock in and play our game, it looked good,” Venturella said. “The first time we saw these guys, we were missing two of our starters and leaders, so that really hurt us. But this time, we knew their play style and were able to adapt and overcome it.”

Venturella credited his team’s formation and discipline as key factors in the win.

“We utilize a five-back system that helps us out a lot,” he said. “Our wingbacks can get into the play but also help out defensively, so it’s really well-balanced. Some of our best strikers are up top, and when we find them at their feet or through balls, we can find the back of the net.”

With playoffs just around the corner, Venturella said the Knights are aiming high.

“The ultimate goal is a state championship,” he said. “We’re hoping for a first-round bye, and from there, we want to take it all.”

For Harrells head coach David Arce, the loss was disappointing but revealed what he already knew about his team’s heart and resilience.

“They don’t give up,” Arce said. “That’s all they have is fight. That’s all they’ve shown the whole season. Even early on when we had things to work on, one thing we never had to question was their fight. They’ve got the biggest hearts, and I think that showed tonight.”

Arce said he hopes his players can carry that same fire into the postseason while keeping their composure.

“You always want composure,” he said. “But if there’s not a little bit of fire in your eyes, I don’t know what’s even worth doing. Our goal is simple, state championship.”

With both teams’ seasons now complete, Greenfield and Harrells share the crown as 2-A CPIC conference champs.
