The Union Spartans and the Hobbton Wildcats met Tuesday for the Spartans’ second match in two days after suffering an opening season loss on Monday 3-0 to Lakewood.

After losing the first set 25-8, the Spartans gave the Wildcats a run for their money in the second set, but Hobbton held on to take the win 25-21. The third, and what would be the final, set was very much like the first, with Hobbton taking it 25-13, giving them a 3-0 victory.

Arina Bell would lead the Spartans with four kills to her credit. Nakia Owens also tossed in two kills. Brittany Register picked up two digs and Bell would also lead Union with three aces.

“We are young and learning to work together and we are a young team,” said Spartan coach Krystin McPhail.

The day before, Union traveled to Lakewood in both teams’ 2016 season opener. Both teams had the jitters in the open set, but Lakewood seemed to settle down and ultimately took care of business, handily taking down the Spartans, 3-0. Scoring for the match was 25-6, 25-11 and 25-14.

Mistakes were costly for the young Spartans who had difficulties with fundamentals.

“Poor serving and passing to target was a problem. Allison Alphin is fulfilling her role as team captain, the leader of the team, I have high expectations for this team,” McPhail stated.

“Tweaking the fundamentals will be a key factor in how far this team can go, but we will work and get better as the season goes along,” concluded McPhail.
