Kaia Johnson scored 14 points, 10 of which came in the first half, to lead the Lady Spartans to a 48-24 Four County Conference win over Trask on Thursday night.
Union took an 8-4 lead going into the second quarter and would go on a scoring frenzy in the second quarter to take a 23-13 lead at the half.
In the second half the Spartans continued to pour on the defensive with a half-court trap. The scrappy defense caused the Titans to turn the ball over and allowed the Spartans to score at the other end. After a 12-2 run, the Spartans were in control with a 37-18 lead. It was pretty much the same scenario in the fourth quarter as all of the Spartans would see playing time.
Johnson led Union with 14 points, followed by LaTyra English with nine. Ashanti Corbett and Alison Alphin scored six points each.
According to Union coach Bryant Register, the half-court trapping defense was the key to the team’s success.
“Our effort and hard play was evident. We caused them to make several turnovers with our trapping defense,” noted Register. “We need to clean up our offensive execution, but it is a work in progress.”
The Spartans record is now 3-5 overall and 1-1 in conference play. They will play again on Jan. 3 at Wallace.
