Midway’s JV football team opened up their home schedule on Wednesday night, filling holes in their schedule with a non-conference game against North Lenoir. After a promising start that led to an early 8-0 lead, the Hawks reeled off 20 unanswered points to down the Raiders 20-8.

Midway struck first on their first drive of the game, marching downfield and scoring a rushing touchdown with 3:42 on the clock. The two-point conversion was successful and Midway led 8-0.

That wouldn’t last long.

North Lenoir struck right back on a two play drive that was highlighted by 52-yard touchdown run. The Hawks failed on the two-point conversion, preserving the Raiders 8-6 lead.

That tally held up the rest of the half as the teams then traded turnovers and stalled drives, including Midway coming up with a sack of the quarterback deep in Raider territory to shutdown a Hawks scoring threat as time expired.

Picking back up in the third quarter, North Lenoir took advantage of a strong rushing game and poor tackling from the Raiders to score on the opening drive. With 6:34 on the clock, the Hawks found the end zone for the go-ahead score. Once again, the two-point try failed and the Hawks led 12-6.

Midway’s first drive of the second half quickly went south as the Raiders fumbled on their own 34-yard line to put North Lenoir right back in scoring position. The Hawks capitalized when they punched it in from short yardage for the score. This time the two-point try converted to push the lead to 20-8 with 2:38 left in the third.

Although the Raiders had a pair of opportunities throughout the remainder of the game, untimely turnovers and stalled drives ultimately thwarted any chances for Midway to get back into contention.

With the loss, Midway drops to 1-1 overall on the season. They set their sights on getting back into the win column next Thursday when they travel to take on Lakewood.
