The Lady Lions opened the Carolinas Christian Athletic Association Conference volleyball season by sweeping their first two opponents.

First to go down were the Patriots from Columbus Christian. The MCA Lions went out to an early 10-3 lead and never looked back, winning 25-18, 25-15 and 25-21.

Britney Christianson and Taylor Faircloth led the Lions in serving points, with both running seven-point streaks. Courtney Barber handed out 28 assists, with Emma White and Erynn Sessoms combining for 18 kills. Caroline Matthews tallied 21 digs.

The Lions followed this victory up by sweeping the Wildcats of Grace Christian, 25-6, 25-15 and 25-21.

Sessoms ran off seven straight points to expand the lead to 14-2 in the opening set, with Reagan Warren adding five kills. Barber racked up 23 assists with White adding six kills and three blocks. Ashley Hayes added three kills and five digs, followed by Katelyn Fann with five kills and one block.

“I am so proud of these girls. Many worked hard over the summer to step up their game, and it is paying off. They have great attitudes, work ethic and are coachable — that makes my job easy,” said Lions coach Dan Heinz.

MCA JV and junior high also won their matches 2-1 over Columbus and Grace.

The Lions will be off next week, and come back to travel to Liberty Christian in Fayetteville on Sept. 12.
