The Union Spartans put on an offensive and defense show as they defeated Jones Senior High School by a score of 64-0. The game was never even close as seven different players scored touchdowns.
The Spartans got on the scoreboard on their first offensive series as Elijah McKoy scored on a big 25-yard run around the outside to make the score 6-0.
On the next offensive possession, the Trojans fumbled deep in their own territory and the ball was scooped up and carried across the end zone by Michael Robinson for the Spartans second score of the night. After the two-point conversion, Union led 14-0.
After a three-and-out by Jones Senior, the Spartans were back on offense. Vance King made a big 50-yard run to score a touchdown to make the score 20-0.
The second quarter started like the first quarter ended with King scoring again, this time on a short 5-yard run to make the score 26-0. On the next offensive series for the Trojans, they tried a pass play and it was intercepted by Paris Baker who took it all the way in for a touchdown to make the score 32-0. On the very next drive by Jones Senior, it was deja vu as Baker had another pick six. After the two-point conversion the Spartans took a 40-0 lead into halftime.
The third quarter started with the Spartans receiving the ball and scoring again on a big run by Isaac Underwood to make the score 48-0 after another two-point conversion.
Emari Carter got in on the scoring with a big 47-yard run to begin the fourth quarter. Tyler Murphy punched in the 2-point conversion to make the score 56-0.
The Spartans would get on the scoreboard one more time on a late 30 yard run by Trey Underwood and 2-point conversion by run by Carter to make the final score 64-0.
“Offensively we did very well and the defense pitched a shutout. Our kicker Mayko Gomez had three touchbacks on kickoffs. The entire defense played well, but the one who stood out tonight was Paris Baker with two pick-6s and a fumble recovery,” said Union coach Doug Burley.
The 2-2 Spartans will be back on their home field next Friday night in a game against Swansboro High School.
