Union’s Lady Spartans were back on their home court Thursday afternoon as the Lady Bulldogs from Princeton took the victory in straight sets 3-0.
In the first set of the set, Princeton got off to a quick start going up 3-0, but the Spartans quickly got on the scoreboard to make it 3-1. After some back and forth rallies, the Bulldogs then went up 16-10. The Lady Spartans then went on a run behind the serving of Lindsey Ammons and Nykia Owens to make a game of it. Princeton finally pulled out the first set by a score of 25-20.
After a switch of courts, Princeton got off to a very fast start going up 11-1 right out of the gate in set 2. Sabrina Newkirk then got hot with her serves and got some points for the Spartans on the board, but the Bulldogs pulled away again and won set two 25-13.
Set 3 was the closest of the match. Though Princeton got on the scoreboard first the Spartans did not give up and kept fighting. With the Bulldogs leading 15-7, Newkirk once again went on a scoring streak to bring Union to within four points at 15-11.
Princeton then scored 4 straight points but strong serves by Ammons and Brittany Register brought the Spartans back to within two points at 20-18. Princeton then went up 23-18, but Allison Hope got off several good serves to close the gap to 23-21 but the Bulldogs pulled out the victory 25-20 in set 3.
Newkirk finished up the match with four kills and Ammons added two. Owens had four service aces to end the night.
“Chloe Riley had two impressive blocks and Allison Hope had her best game of the season setting yesterday,” replied Coach Blake Travers.
“Overall we played pretty well. Our serves and hitting were good today. We’re really close to putting together a complete game where all phases are there,” Travers concluded.
Union will be back on their home court again next Thursday as they take on Rosewood.
