Hobbton Middle hosted the Spartans of Union Middle in football Wednesday afternoon. The Spartans got away with a narrow win, 22-20.
The Wildcats took off out of the gate scoring on their first possession with 6:16 left in the first quarter. Jacuar Capers scored on a 17 yard run capping a 47 yard drive. Loden Bradshaw scored the PAT for an 8-0 Wildcat lead. That lead held up through the rest of the first half.
Union was threatening, but fortunately for the Wildcats the Spartans lost a fumble which Hobbton recovered. Union was close again late in the half but coughed it up again at the 4-yard line with 46 seconds left in the half.
Union had first chance after the break, but things didn’t go their way, losing another fumble. Midway during the third, Union got their scoring machine going and scored on 17-yard scamper by Isaac Jimenez. Jashawn Melvin scored the PAT to tie with 3:50 left in the third quarter.
The Wildcats lost a turnover on the next try with Union recovering in good field position at the Wildcat 20-yard line. With 1:57 left in the third, Shamar Chestnut scored on a 20-yard run. The PAT was good on a run by Jimenez to put the Spartans up 16-8.
The Wildcats got on the board again early in the final period on a 45-yard pass play from Bradshaw to Chase Bland. The PAT failed on a run.
Union scored again with 1:19 left in the game on a 13-yard run. The Wildcats stopped the PAT attempt to leave the score at 22-14.
The Wildcats turned the ball around and scored immediately on a 40-yard pass from Bradshaw to Justin Renfrow. The PAT failed and the game ended with Union Middle barely squeezing by at 22-20.
