The Lady Spartan basketball team won its first game in the North Johnston Christmas tournament on Wednesday, beating the Falls Lake Academy Firebirds by 10 points, 30-20, to advance to day two of the tourney.
Though Union ended up coming away with a double-digit win, the game didn’t start out in their favor early on. They actually were behind by a point at the end of the first, Falls Lake ending the first with the 9-8 edge.
It was all Union from then on out when they took command in the second quarter, getting the lead and never getting behind again. Offense and defense stepped up in the second, offense went for two more adding 10 to the scoreboard while the defense shutdown the Firebirds holding them to just two.
With the first half finished the Spartans had taken the lead going into the break up by seven, the score 18-11.
Going into the third quarter, Union slowed down offensively but defense remained strong. Having half the production it did in the second Union only went for five in this period. It didn’t hurt them much as the defense only allowed one extra point by Falls Lake, they had three. This pushed their lead up to 23-14 going into the fourth quarter.
Both team picked it up in the final period of the game on offense. The Firebirds doubled their efforts going for six but it was of little use as the Spartans went for seven giving them the 10-point victory.
LaTyra English led all scoring for Union dropping 13 for her team. Her help came from Justice Johnson who had eight, Kaia Johnson with four, Ashanti Corbett with three and Nikya Owens adding two.
The Lady Spartans are now 2-7 overall and 1-2 in conference, playing for the championship Thursday when they take on the North Johnston ladies on their home court.
