Union lost to Heide Trask in both softball and baseball, failing to defend their home field Monday night. The Spartans faced the Titans, losing 9-2 in baseball and 16-0 in softball.

Baseball

With it being only the second game of the season, the home team, as expected, had a few rough edges that saw them go down by seven.

For the first five innings Trask was dominating the game at 5-0. Then the Spartans had all bases loaded and their next hitter brought a player home for their first run bringing the score to 6-1.

Scoring again on both sides came in the seventh and final inning which ended the game at 9-2.

“We’re young, got a lot of kids working,” said Douglas Burley Union head baseball coach. “Got to be a bit more disciplined on the field. Our defense played much better tonight. We got a junior, senior a bunch of sophomores and freshmen so we’re still a young team.”

Softball

During the girls softball match, the game was called in the fifth inning as the ten-run rule took effect.

Things got out of hand in a hurry as the Trask ladies jumped out to a 7-0 lead at the end of the first two innings. It was the same during the third and fourth with them finding seven more runs. Three came in the third and four came in the fourth, the last two that gave the run rule coming in the fifth.

“There’s definitely a learning curve, so we’ll have a lot to practice,” said Megan Pierce Union’s softball coach. “We had a lot of good plays but just couldn’t bring it all together.”

The Ladies of Union’s softball team will be playing Friday at Jones Senior and the boys team will be playing Pender at home on Wednesday.
