The Lady Dark Horses soccer team were in the drivers seat Tuesday night in their home field debut. Taking on the Lady Pirates of Topsail, Clinton took the shutout win after a two goal second half, the final 3-0.

“I think we got off to a slow start — we picked it up in the second half, we came out competed and started playing the way we know how, which gave us a good win,” said assistant coach Adam Smith.

Things starting out slow was apparent for the Horses as they only had two corner kicks and one shot on the goal during the entire 40-minute first period. Meanwhile, the Lady Pirates only had one corner but they had more than their share of shots on the goal with five. While it seemed one sided by Topsail, Clinton was the one who held the advantage after the first holding a slim lead 1-0.

The second half was all Clinton for the remainder of the night as they completely dominated the second half. One of the determining factors being the Horses defense who held Topsail scoreless again. On top of the defense taking the Pirates out the game their offense picked it up and were rolling in the second period. Getting two more unanswered goals the Dark Horses pushed their lead to 3-0 giving them the shutout victory.

“Facing tough opponents like this is good for our girls. We’ve got strong competition in the coming games with West Carteret and Ashley, which means we can’t take anyone lightly going forward,” said Smith

Goals for the Horses came from Taylor Spell who had one with an assist, Shakira Oseguera and Kayla Yang had the remaining two. Elizabeth Coleman and Ashlyn Williams had the other two assist for the Horses. Edye Carr was also solid in front of the net, she had three saves.

With the win the Lady Dark Horses go to 2-1-1 on the season and will take the field again Friday when they travel to West Carteret.
