The Lakewood Lady Leopards soccer team, coming off a 9-0 drubbing at the hands of Clinton High School, rebounded strongly with a 3-2 victory against the rebels of North Duplin High School.
The game was always competitive, with Lakewood striking first, courtesy of a goal by Labria Williams, which gave Lakewood an early 1-0 lead. The Leopards would further seize the momentum when Courtney Mozee scored the second goal for the Leopards. However, the Rebels wouldn’t go away. With a minute left in the first, North Duplin scored on a penalty kick, to trim the Lakewood lead to, 2-1.
After the intermission, Lakewood would again take a two-goal lead with a score from Mozee. At minute 15, North Duplin would get a much needed goal to again cut the lead to one goal. The Leopards clamped down on defense and secured the 3-2 victory.
“We are happy with the outcome,” said Evert Cruz, head coach of the Lady Leopards. “ Our Leopards were able to capitalize in some key moments that ultimately secured our win. Moving forward we plan to minimize mistakes and continue growth.”
The win brings Lakewood’s record to 1-2 for the season. Next up for the Leopards is a match with the Eagles of Rosewood High School on Tuesday.
