The Midway Lady Raiders opened their season Tuesday with a win over the visiting Lady Eagles of Rosewood. Midway won the match 3-0.
In the opening set, the Lady Eagles, led by Lexi Mercer, took an early 5-2 lead. The Lady Raiders pulled even at 6 and moments later, led 12-7. Rosewood was able to come as close as 16-14 before the home team seized momentum to win 25-18.
Midway dominated the 2nd frame, jumping to an 11-0 lead. The Lady Eagles never competed and were trounced 25-6.
The 3rd and final set was more competitive. After the score was knotted at 5, the Lady Raider reeled off 4 straight to go up 9-5. They controlled the net from that point coming away with a 25-16 win.
The Midway junior varsity won their match 2-0.
“Great first win for j. v. and varsity to start our season,” asserted Lady Raider coach Jennifer Naylor. “We talk about the 3 C’s: confidence, control, and communication. If we can do those 3 things and that’s what we did tonight, we can make good choices. We’re all about choosing the best option. Tonight we had great choices and great leadership.”
Leading the way for the Lady Raiders, Hannah Lucas and Savannah Spell had 5 kills each. Leah Williams provided 4 assists and 18 service points.
Rosewood falls to 0-2, having played Charles B. Aycock on Monday.
Midway, 1-0, will participate in the Black and Gold Tournament at UNC-Pembroke on Saturday. The Lady Raiders will travel to Rosewood for a rematch on Monday.
