The Midway softball and soccer teams picked up a pair of conference wins on Tuesday evening as they bested the visiting Lady Cougars in both contests.

Softball

In softball action, Midway picked up a convincing win to improve on their record in the first round of action since returning from Spring Break. The Lady Raiders churned in a dominating effort to win a mercy-rule shortened 13-3 contest.

Midway tallied five runs in the first inning to establish an early lead that would never be challenged.

Senior Hannah Lucas belted one-out, two-RBI double to score Blythe Best and Leah Williams, followed two batters later by Laura Person scoring Lucas. Freshman Miranda Holmes got a single that scored Person and Alyssa Wrench to make it 5-0 at the end of the inning.

The Lady Raiders added three more runs in the second as JJ Sankey batted in Caitlyn Holland, Lucas batted in Williams, and Best crossed home plate to make it an 8-0 advantage.

Eventually, Goldsboro strung together scattered scoring opportunities to plate their three runs but Midway was too much to as they cruised to the 13-3 victory.

Leading Midway at the plate was Best, Lucas and Sankey, who each had three hits. Williams, Person and Wrench were close behind with two hits each.

With the win, Midway is now 7-5 overall and 3-1 in the East Central Conference.

Soccer

Over on the soccer field, the contest was a much more intense battle. Emotions were high as both teams engaged in a physical contest.

The game was deadlocked at 1-1 with under 20 minutes to go in the game as the action was heating up. With 17:56 left on the clock, a Lady Raiders send in found itself rolling freely toward the goal. Midway’s Carli Carroll arrived and sent he ball in to give Midway the 2-1 lead.

The the clock began to melt away, Goldsboro turned up the intensity but freshman goal keeper Jordan Wallum, behind a solid Midway defensive effort, thwarted the Lady Cougars scoring attempts to preserve the 2-1 win.

With the win, Midway improves to 7-3 overall and 3-2 in the East Central Conference.

Both teams will be back in action on Thursday as they travel to take on East Duplin.
