Hobbton High School will have 12 athletes participating in the state track championships at NC A&T Friday. As a team, the Wildcat women finished fourth overall and the men came in fifth in the regional competition, held at Pender High School on Saturday.
Those attending state finals will be Josh Polk, Xavier McLamb, Victor Aguirre, Donnie Davis, Lakelyn Bass, Janet Thompson, Alexis Morrissey, India Alston, Adriana Montes, Denisse Sada-Romero, Shalaya Bell and Yocelyn Rivera.
In regionals, Bass finished second in triple jump, 32 feet, 9 inches; first in pole vault, at 11 feet, 6 inches, and first in long jump, at 16 feet, 2 inches.
Bell finished second in high jump at 4 feet, 9 inches — a personal record — and Rivera finished fifth.
Morrissey placed third in discus with a throw of 88 feet, 11 inches — also a personal record and good enough to qualifying for state.
The girls 4×800 relay team of Sada-Romero, Thompson, Montes and Alston finished fourth in regionals, qualifying for the state meet with a time of 11:09. Thompson also qualified placing second in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 51.53. The 4×400 relay team of Alston, Thompson, Montes and Bass finished first with a time of 4:24.74.
Alston finished fifth in the 400m run with a time of 64.82.
Davis placed third in discus with a throw of 111 feet, 5 inches, a personal record. Polk placed first in both the 100m dashand 200m dash, with respective times of 10.9 and 22.2. Aguirre placed third in the 200m dash with a time of 2:09. McLamb placed third in the 1600m run with a time of 4:58, while also taking fourth in the 3200m run with a time of 11:07, another of the many personal records broken by Hobbton student-athletes on Saturday.
