County sports podcast makes comeback

The Sampson Independent will be reviving another sports media outlet pretty soon. The podcast hosted by Independent contributor Ryan Carter will start up again on June 4, offering a host of interviews with movers and shakers in the local sports scene.

Carter’s passion for spreading local sports news in a modern way that reaches all ages and promotes local high schools has been his steady motivation, from offering weekly football predictions in his “Pigskin Picks” column while a student at Clinton High School to his sports podcast, which returns next week after a hiatus during Carter’s first year in college.

“The Sampson County Sports Podcast is a great way of spreading sports news around the county in a modern way. In the first year of the podcast, it was received by all ages, especially the students from the local high schools,” said Carter, who called the venture “well-received.”

It is making its return, he noted, “to give fans the ability to find out what’s going on during the summer months at their local high schools.”

The podcast itself will feature interviews with coaches, reviews from the past seasons and a preview to the upcoming fall sports season. This go-round the podcast will feature a new series, “Where Are They Now,” in which Carter will interview former coaches and players from the surrounding high schools to find out what their lives have been like after sports.

Carter is currently attending the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. He said his hope is that the podcast will help in his future career covering athletics in a broadcast medium.

“As I continue my education at the University of Alabama in news media, this podcast and the interviews I do will help me further my career in the future and help me get a job one day at a major sports network,” concluded Carter.

Listeners will be able to tune in soon to the podcast as the first three are slated to take place next week. The first of three starting on Monday, June 4, will be an overall review of spring sports. The following day, on June 5, Carter takes on winter sports and its review. Then after a brief day break the podcast tackles the last of the reviews with fall sports taking place on Thursday, June 7.
