The Union Spartans hosted the Hobbton Wildcats in a tough rematch Wednesday. The Spartans came out on top, but just by a goal, with a score of 2-1.

Early in the first half, Hobbton scored the first goal of the game, showing improvement since their last match against the Spartans. It seemed as if the Spartans couldn’t get their heads in the game, and struggled to get the ball down towards the goal.

As the end the first half neared, the score was still 1-0, with the Wildcats in the lead. Finally, at the 5:23 mark Irvin Ocampo made the first goal for Union putting the game at a tie of 1-1. Suddenly, with less than one minute left in the first half, Marco Baltazar, scored into a wide-open goal, shocking the whole crowd. At the end of the first half the Spartans had taken the lead with a score of 2-1.

When the second half started, neither team could make progress towards the goal before the other team would take back control.

The Wildcat defense fought hard, but were unable to score on the offensive end. There were no more scores in the second half, leaving the final score at 2-1.

Head coach, David Ameen, commented on his team’s performance and improvements to be made.

“This particular game, I think we played sloppier than usual because of some minor injuries affecting the team. However, I think we are where we need to be, but will work on fine-tuning the small facets of our game,” he said.

“Overall, I am still very proud and hope to keep the momentum going as we continue to see our soccer rank rise.”

The win for the Spartans make them 6-0-0. They are currently ranked number three in NC 1A soccer. Next, the Spartans will host the West Bladen Knights on Monday, Sept. 14th.
