The Union Spartans football team came up short in their most recent scuffle against Heide Trask. Facing them at home Friday night, a relentless running game was too much for the Spartans to handle in a 25-6 loss to the Titans.

An assault from the ground game that favored the visitors is the story of this matchup. The night started out at a rather slow pace, but the rushing yards eventually started to stack up for Trask.

The real threat wasn’t even the running back; it was the quartberback receiving the snaps. Every time it seemed like the Spartans had something figured out a quarterback keeper would gash them.

It wasn’t all Trask’s offense that won this game, though, but the lack from Union was a huge factor. The Spartans never found anything that worked consistently offensively. While they had a few good plays here and there, each drive eventually stalled out as Union was forced to punt to or turned it over on downs.

The one positive aspect from the night for the Spartans was their special teams. Not only did they generate a turnover, but the only touchdown they scored came on a kick return.

In the end, solid special teams play and a few big stops by the defense that slowed down Trask still wasn’t enough. The inability to move the chains and get into the end zone ultimately held the Spartans back.

“Thing just didn’t go our way. Trask was a pretty good football team,” head coach Douglas Burley said after the game.

Things surely didn’t go there way, at least not offensively, ad they just couldn’t keep up with Trask in the end.

The loss brings the Spartans to 2-2 overall. They were scheduled to be back at home this Friday night, hosting Jones Senior, however the game will now be contested on Wednesday due to the threat of Hurricane Florence.
