Participating in the Bulldog Invitational at Terry Sanford High School, the Midway Raiders took on the Northwood Chargers on Saturday in the opening games of the baseball tournament. Entering the tournament undefeated, it was expected that some big competition awaited the Raiders. This proved to be true on Saturday as the Midway suffered their first loss of the season in a 13-0 blowout.

The Chargers jumped on Midway from the get-go, pushing them deep into a corner and forcing an early pitching change. Northwood was poised to inflict more damage, but Midway got out of the jam, though trailing 3-0.

The score sat at 3-0 until the top of the fourth, where once again the Chargers struck hard. Northwood posted eight runs to propel themselves to an 11-0 lead.

With Midway unable to respond in the bottom of the fourth, the Chargers were already back at the plate in the top of the fifth, where they continued to pile on the runs. Northwood tallied up two more runs, reaching 13-0. With the Raiders again unable to respond in the bottom of the inning, the game ended in a 13-0 run-rule.

As the score indicates, it wasn’t a successful day at the plate for Midway. They only recorded one hit which came from Cal Tyndall. For the day, they got four baserunners aboard throughout the game as Carson Calcutt drew one walk and Cameron Calcutt drew two.

For Northwood, they complied 10 hits for the day.

With the loss, Midway sits at 16-1 overall. They were back in action on Monday against Cape Fear. A full rundown from that game can be found in Wednesday’s edition.
