Clinton’s girls basketball team improved to 4-0 after their 63-54 win over Goldsboro in the second day of the Dark Horse Tip Off Classic on Saturday. The game was played at Clinton.

Clinton jumped out to an early 15-11 lead in a first quarter that foreshadowed that the two prominent offenses were there to play. Clinton then used strong play from the inside to build their lead to 30- 25.

The Lady Dark Horses then saw their lead shrink to 47-45 after a 20 point third quarter from the visiting squad. The Clinton defense then settled in in the final stretch, allowing just 9 points in the fourth, claiming the 63-54 win.

Brielle Mitchell once again paced the Lady Dark Horses as she had 18 points on the afternoon. Kiera Maber had 7, as did Zoey Harris. Alaina Capps had 3 points and Alex Canady and Ashlyn Williams each scored in double figures with 11 and 15, respectively.

“It was another solid team win,” asserted Clinton’s head coach, Chris Owens. “I was pleased with the way our girls responded to a good team, in Goldsboro, when they were making their little run. I thought Brielle, Ashlyn, and Alex all did a nice job setting the tone for us on the offensive end, and we were able to get good contributions from everybody.”

Clinton will take its 4-0 record to Jacksonville on Tuesday night when they battle a great Northside team. The game, that tips at 6 p.m. in Jacksonville, has all of the potential to be a great early-season showdown between two teams that are each playing at a high level.
