Phoenix Lodge #77 and Julia Chapter #005 celebrated their 46th anniversary Sept. 12 with an afternoon of worship, history, recognition, service and fellowship at Poplar Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Faison.

The Fayetteville-based organizations are part of the United National Supreme Council, Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite Free Masons of the World, 33rd and Last Degree, and Order of Eastern Stars Inc.

The celebration was held under the theme “We Are Better Together,” with Proverbs 29:18 serving as the theme scripture: “Where there is no vision, the people perish.”

Phoenix Lodge #77 is led by Worshipful Master Bro. Jonathan Davis, while Worthy Matron Sis. Tammy Cunningham leads Julia Chapter #005.

The anniversary was hosted at Poplar Grove through the efforts of Past Worthy Matron Priscilla Clark, a Sampson County native and member of the church. Her connection to both the church and the Eastern Star helped bring together members of the organizations, the church family, relatives, friends and visitors from surrounding communities.

The afternoon began with a formal processional into the sanctuary. The Rev. Lawrence A. Aycock, accompanied by the Poplar Grove Missionary Baptist Church Choir, led “We Come This Far By Faith,” setting the tone for a service centered on gratitude, faith and appreciation for 46 years of service.

The program continued with musical selections by the church choir. Past Worthy Matron Lizetta Bellamy presented the scripture, Bro. Ronald Apollo offered prayer and Sis. Debra Thomas extended the welcome.

Thomas recognized the pastor, church family, Eastern Star members, Masons, visiting organizations, family members, friends and guests gathered for the celebration.

An offering was received by the ushers, followed by another selection from the choir.

Honoring 46 years of history

A portion of the service was dedicated to preserving and sharing the histories of Phoenix Lodge #77 and Julia Chapter #005.

Chris Alexander presented the history of Phoenix Lodge #77, reflecting on the lodge’s early meeting locations and recognizing the worshipful masters who have helped guide the organization during its 46-year history. His presentation highlighted the leadership and commitment that have sustained Phoenix Lodge through periods of growth and change.

The history of Julia Chapter #005 was presented by Past Worthy Matron Jascline Batiste. She reflected on the chapter’s beginnings, its meeting locations throughout the years, organizational growth, community involvement and accomplishments.

The presentations highlighted generations of men and women who have invested their time, leadership and service in their respective organizations and communities.

Worship and a message of faithfulness

Past Worthy Matron Priscilla Clark introduced the afternoon speaker, the Rev. Willie C. Alford, pastor of Poplar Grove Missionary Baptist Church.

Prior to the message, the church choir presented “I Trust In God,” featuring Aycock. The selection developed into a period of worship as those gathered reflected on God’s faithfulness throughout the years.

Alford delivered the anniversary message from Psalm 124, centering his sermon on the declaration, “If it had not been for the Lord who was on our side.”

His message emphasized that reaching 46 years represented more than an organizational accomplishment and provided an opportunity to acknowledge the grace and mercy of God.

Alford reflected on challenges people encounter through sickness, loss, hardship, uncertainty and changing times. He encouraged those gathered to remember that no circumstance is beyond God’s ability to bring his people through.

Throughout the message, he returned to a familiar testimony of the church: “Down through the years, the Lord has been good to me.”

The sermon also challenged members not to allow titles, positions, attire or organizational achievements to overshadow their faith. While recognizing service through organizations such as Phoenix Lodge #77 and Julia Chapter #005, Alford reminded attendees that their relationship with God should remain foundational.

His message concluded with an invitation to Christian discipleship and encouragement for those present to continue trusting God through every season of life.

Scholarship, recognition and service

The awards and presentations portion of the program highlighted community service and educational advancement.

Members of Phoenix Lodge #77 and Julia Chapter #005 participated in a scholarship fundraising effort to support students pursuing their education. Nearly $1,500 was raised.

The afternoon also included recognition of veterans and members for service to their communities and country.

Davis was crowned Mr. Phoenix Lodge 2026, while Tisha Sumners was crowned Ms. Julia Chapter 2026. The recognition was part of the organizations’ continued emphasis on fellowship, fundraising and service.

Leadership rooted in service

During remarks, Davis spoke about the responsibility that accompanies leadership.

He emphasized that leadership should not center solely on a title or position, but on serving the organization as a whole. He reminded those present that positions may change over time, but the responsibility to serve others remains.

His comments reflected the anniversary theme, “We Are Better Together,” and encouraged members to continue demonstrating faith, charity, unity and service.

Cunningham expressed appreciation to Poplar Grove Missionary Baptist Church, its choir and church family for hosting the celebration.

Visiting organizations included Sandhill Lodge, Aruba Lodge, Queen of Wisdom and Astra Chapter. Family members, friends and other visitors also attended.

Fellowship beyond the sanctuary

Following the service, attendees gathered for a meal and continued fellowship.

A blessing was offered over the food, with gratitude expressed for life, health, provision and the opportunity to gather together. The meal provided members, visitors, family and friends another opportunity for conversation and fellowship after the formal service concluded.

The afternoon ended in the same spirit in which it began, centered on gratitude, unity, faith and community.

The 46th anniversary celebration brought Masons, Eastern Stars, church members, visiting organizations, families and friends together to recognize the history and service of Phoenix Lodge #77 and Julia Chapter #005 while reflecting on the anniversary theme, “We Are Better Together.”
